I have been collaborating with the ever talented artist, Tobey Albright the past few months as our ideas took shape. We are thrilled to share with you all the spiffy features this blog will offer. You will be able to view images larger then ever along with watching slideshows highlighting each session. Hard work and determination rank pretty high in my book and this guy has enough to go around! I really don't know how Andrew keeps such a even balance between training five days a week, cycling at weekend events all season long, volunteering and not to mention pursuing future plans in sports medicine. Wheeew! I'm worn out just writing all that! I was lovin' the direction these sessions took from his stylish-classy-casual look straight to his team bike and gear. A big thanks to Russell Cycle and Fitness for the use of their fabulous vintage bike - I may need to add this to my growing collection. Thank you for such a fun opportunity Mr. Lindner! -Laura

We survived sweltering heat, dodged threatening rain all the while swapping stories that summer evening. I loved the chance to see, first hand, the country stables where Paige boards her horse. The rolling farm has become a haven for neglected and unwanted pets as well chickens who look like they are wearing pants! The sun slowly became defused to a soft golden glow - just what we hoped for her session. The sound of Paige's easy laugh complemented her cute western boots paired with cut-offs ... a terrific fit to her personality. I think out shining everything was her sweet smile!

From the cityscape backgrounds captured in his first session to the bold colors meeting the urban grit of the courts ... I invite you to catch a glimpse of what I am going to call the original DB. Determination and hard work obviously are a pasted down family trait and Drew is no exception. Working towards future scholastic goals are as high on his priority list as his title of basketball team captain at Notre Dame. Drew has quite a bit of responsibility and he handles it with as much style and grace as he would making a shot on the court. Rock on Mr. Blumenshine!

I can't think of anywhere else i would have rather been that afternoon. I haven't seen Aaron and Joy since photographing their wedding in June but, just like always, they sat close sharing a smile and laugh. Clear blue skies and 65 degrees waited for us as we headed out the fancy doors of our hotel for the Country Club Plaza! True to typical form, I Ooo-ed and Ahhh-ed making a huge deal over every beautiful spot we found. It wasn't difficult wIth 15 lovely blocks of fabulous architecture and 20 plus ornate fountains - each one seemingly more perfect them the last. By sunset our stomaches were growling and Aaron lead us to one of the trendiest most decadent burger joints I have ever been to, Blanc Burgers + Bottles. Dave being Mr. adventurous ordered a burger decorated with a fried egg, ham, homeade pickles and topped with Blanc's own ketchup and mustard recipe! It sounded a bit out there for my nearly vegetarian taste but, ended up - AMAZING! The entire experience at the Plaza was so delightful we stayed an extra day! Joy and Aaron you are a beautiful couple from the inside out. It was our pleasure to photograph your new life together in Kansas City - thank you for allowing us to capture your love.

True story. I have found a new love, photographing cyclists! Not only are the bikes sparkly and cool but my latest subject was pretty terrific as well!! Andrew and I had a fun afternoon snapping shots of him in his team gear and sweet bike. Training five days a week and competing in races nearly every weekend during the summer Andrew doesn't have much free time. I am looking forward to seeing a race next season!! (I'll bring my camera too!) Love the vintage bike? Complements of Russell Cycle in Washington. Stay tuned for more images from Andrew's session!

Lily's Quinceanera

I raced to out the door and up Rt. 39 just ahead of the dark clouds that quickly were closing in. My doggie co-pilot, Stella was beside me with her face planted against the window enjoying the attention she was getting from passing cars. Lily and I had been planning this session for over a month and we both knew we didn't have much time to make it happen - especially with her Quinceanera celebration just a few months off! Finally arriving, we followed Lily and her father, Rick, to the most beautiful park just outside the city. Lily and I raced around shooting pictures while the wind picked up and the sky grew even darker! Thrilled with the lush location and sparkling stream I quietly pray for just a few more minutes. As we finished the session Lily, Stella and I are still bouncing with energy as we jump in our cards to drive off ... the first few rain drops hit my window as we turn onto the interstate and head for home.

The countdown was on... I think this particular summer evening there were only 7 days left. Not that anyone was counting. :) Taylor, headed for U of I in only a matter of days was all smiles and a beautiful family portrait was in session! Even the Puggle, (Pug-Beagle Hybrid) Jack took his place in the front row sporting a bright red (matching) collar. Nice touch! The perfectly polished cream convertible was looking stunning as it sparkled in the late afternoon light with everyone lounged around it. What a fun way to end the summer and begin a new chapter... Lovely job everyone!

This image makes me happy. I look at it sometimes just to brighten my day. Weird, I know. I forget about the fact that it was frigid outside, that the west coast rain was getting the best of me and defiantly stealing all the fabulous shots I had been planning in my head for months, not to mention the idea of my fluffy pet being thousands of miles away. I don't like to play the pessimist so, a few redeeming points... a mini teepee that sat in the middle of our brightly colored room, the natural night lights like I have never seen before, the lawn wedding of two of my dearest friends, camp fires on the beach, maybe some of the best food I have ever eaten - it felt like a fairy tale. Now I will leave out the part where the blissful honeymooners plane to Tuscany catches fire...

We have some history together... Mr. and Mrs. W., their beautiful daughters with their dark AMAZING hair, (seriously, these girls can pull off ANY hairstyle in 100% humidity and look fabulous - trust me! I've seen it twice now!!) sweet smiles and energetic husbands I haven't even got to the best part yet! Five wonderful LITTLE people with very big personalities! Yes, little people! It wouldn't be fair to call them just kids or even children - they are truly little people! Perhaps its the fact that they live states away on the scenic west coast, or maybe its just been that long - two years since their last session - my have they grown up! .... "A picture is worth more than a thousand words." and I whole heartedly agree! Especially in this case!! I will stop my ramblings now and let their images speak for them selves!

I would like to begin this post by saying... Wow... no, double Wow!! Ben, I have never met a guy quite like you! Not only did you thoroughly entertain me with your wit (I am a sucker for entertainment), you humored my every creative whim! Not to mention FOUR hours into your shoot (as the last few streaks of sun are almost gone) you offer to pose for even MORE pics!! NO WAY! I have had many a grad session but you might just take the cake for endurance!!! I know, I know... I'm still talking about it! Here's just a few from the session.

Oh, and for the record... Ben was not using the peacocks for target practice - they just happened to be hangin' out in the yard!

I had the privilege of photographing Ryan and Kelly recently. A sweetheart session just for fun - hoping to capture the two of them ... young and in love... and they totally are! You can't miss the fact that they are best friends. Kelly was quick to tell me about her idea. Images to share with their own family someday... We laughed together speculating how 20 years from now their kids will find these images and say "Wow! Mom and Dad were young once!! -- and so cute! I love this idea! 19 hour marathon

I needed to wait until I caught my breath to make this post. Seriously, I have nEvER in almost 5 years finished anything with so much speed! From shooting photographs early that morning (in negative temps) to proofing over a delicious breakfast... Post production, designing cards, sending to the lab... and then in my hands!!! I was amazed to be calling less then 19 hours later - cards are in! Who could this marathon session be for?? None other than my own Mother! P.S. I promised to site my Dad for picking this cool location! I love it when he calls to tell me about interesting new locations to photograph - Good eye Dad!

Sydney: 2010 graduate

It was a bit cold to be on the golf green that afternoon in November. Teeth chattering and noses dripping Sydney and I toughed it out. I suppose some people have built up immunity to the cold. This seemed to be the case of the gentleman - who from what I could tell seemed to have about 80 years plus of "cold immunity". Stopping to shoot the breeze with Syd and I for a minute before taking a wood driver out of his vintage golf bag and hitting quite a long shot! Wow! I didn't even realize the people use golf course after the cheery 60 degree days are over.... News to me! Not being able to bear the chill any longer Syd and I finish up at the green and I head back to my studio to remove the jolly fellow from the background of every photograph. ;)

By the way.... Syd, you rock my socks off!

Sydney - just a peek!

Graduation will be here soon for the class of 2010 and Syd can't wait! We decided to turn her session into multiple shoots - each with a theme. (Of course I am loving this!) The more we talked about her session ... the larger my ideas grew! As soon as she showed me her BeAUtiFUL dress I knew my chandeliers (which had been hanging in my studio since my wonderful husband salvaged them)... would be perfect together! I have been anticipating this shoot since my first glimpse at those sparkly fixtures - just waiting for the perfect opportunity! Syd - I know you are anxious to see these images and there are so many more to show you at your meeting tonight!

third try is the charm!

Just when I thought the Lewis family shoot could not possibly be rained out again... Yep. Thats right. Third time IS the charm! With so much rain this fall it made for totally unpredictable sessions! However, the crisp cool day we finally did end up shooting on was perfect! Sunny with clear blue skies- and what made it even better was the 0% chance of RAIN! The only people who didn't get the memo about family photographs that day were the gang of kids who TP'ed the yard the night before! Mrs. Lewis just laughed as we avoided wide shots that would have been proudly displaying the flowing white paper littering their wooded lot.
Gorgeous home, beautiful yard and a great sense of humor! - Lewis family you are a treat!

Scarlet and Georgie

Scarlet and Georgie are my pals. Four years old and identical twins... My best friends in grade school were twin sisters. They shared everything - their room, their clothes, their homework even their friends. Everything seemed like more fun with a twin. I was so jealous!

This particular sunny day I had the privilege of photographing Scarlet and Georgie. Just like lots of other girls (including me!) they were so excited to have new dresses and coats - NO sharing! From the moment they greeted me on the front porch wearing their matching tiny brown Rocket Dogs until I climbed back in my car at sunset - we played... played to the point of exhaustion! I'm sure the twins mommy and daddy slept well that night... I know i did!

The time has come for the grand finale of Cakes on Walnut! Making an appearance in this upcoming year's cupcake girl calendar is... Miss Ashley! Inspiration for her look was stolen (ha, my awful pun! - if you've seen the movie this may solicit a chuckle) from "The Brothers Bloom" I loved this movie! Loved, as in watched it 3 times in the last 3 weeks! This was purely a fact finding endeavor! At least that is what I told my husband as he poked fun! Either way, I would absolutely recommend renting it. The wardrobe used in the film was tremendous and the humor quite snarky! Lovely job to SJK Studio, Jennifer North, Cakes on Walnut and Miss Ashley for contributing to this great session.

The po-po and Mr T.

Trevor and I were enjoying a nice quiet afternoon shooting his graduate pictures. The quaint town of Washington was somewhat quiet for a Saturday afternoon - with out rain. (Rare, I know!) We laughed as I pulled into the Mayor's parking spot at the City Building, joking about our "fugitive" ways... I don't usually shoot on or even near the train tracks. I'm not sure why, really. Just seems a bit over done perhaps. For some reason that afternoon Trevor and I started walking in the direction of the tracks... Just a few min later I am behind the camera telling T one of my lame jokes when I notice him tense a bit. A squad car rolls by.... and stops. I can't think of anything I'm doing wrong (other than occupying the Mayor's parking spot - in a otherwise empty lot) but, he seems to be very interested in us. Trevor and I purposely start walking towards my car-still talking-avoiding eye contact with the officer. I have never been questioned by the po-po before (let alone heard my name over the police radio!) and it seems almost funny to me that its happening now! Advice to anyone still reading... It is illegal to be on or even near the train tracks (in Washington)! Apparently, it is an offence worthy of jail time! This is news to me!! - all you fellow photogs take note next time you are tempted to shoot here! On a lighter note, Trevor is TeRiFFic! I felt like I was hanging out with a old friend all afternoon. He leaves to join the Marines in December - I wish you all the best in San Diego and hope to hear about it when you are back home for graduation in May!

Pierce n' Breck

I really thing its become a competition of which one of the two can get me to laugh harder! Another perfect afternoon just like she ordered! Sunshine, curls and a big open field. Have I mentioned before how much I love photographing Tess?... Well its true! She is terrific! Amazing hair that I can't get enough of... We even survived multiple sneaky attacks from her new puppy (you may remember this little scoundrel from part one of her shoot - earlier this summer.) Tess and I had just crossed the creek... carefully... and I have hunched into my shooting mode (just about puppy level) - totally ignoring a little leaf rustling in the distance. I should have expected it. Shotsie splashed through the small stream, her paws covered in mud the next second as she lunged at Tess. We both screamed and dodged her playful attempts to ruin Tess' cute outfit. I didn't really care about staying clean (obviously, as I had been lying on the ground just a few shots earlier) but, was caught up in the excitement of the little adventure - screaming and jumping up and down all at once... The mayhem ended and we continued our shoot... Spotless!

Wow, Emily! Your images are wild! I wasn't able to put my finger on it until just now but, I am quite sure of one thing .... If you were to combine Kate Moss, Jane from Tarzan and Meg Ryan... place all of them in the wilderness or, better yet, a jungle ... I'm pretty sure you would end up with images that look strikingly like yours! I absolutely enjoyed our afternoon together and was tickled by your fun, carefree personality and wild shoes! This fall has become a whirlwind of one amazing shoot after another! 5:45a.m. last Monday morning I realized that there is, in fact, a reason people get up at the crack of dawn. It might be to go to work of course, but I have to thing for some its worth it to see those first golden rays of sunrise... BEAUTIFUL! This was my first attempt at a sunrise shoot and I think (even as tired as I was) it was worth it! Shelly Jo dazzled us with her glam 50's look. Her blonde curls and red accents - totally perfect! .... And who could make Jeni's Ice Cream any better than it already is?!

ice cream and pupperoni

The weather was warm and a bit cloudy - just the way I like it. The entire family, even miss Sasha, and I paraded through ISU campus, stopping occasionally as I Ooo'd and Ahhh'd over different photo opportunities. The kids are used to humoring me and my grand ideas - as I seem to always be asking the impossible. ;) "Can you grow about 6 inches taller to fill that gap?" or "hold that pose...." and the infamous, "just one more!" So, we have established what great sports the kids have been over the last three years of photo sessions... It seemed only fitting that we end the night at Emack and Bolio's for ice cream. Miss Sasha had her main course of "pup"eronis early on (bribery... you are my friend)... and was ready to move on... Cookies and Cream on a sugar cone, please! As the sun set just beyond "Uptown" I giggled as I noticed that Sasha had sampled every flavor!

one sunny afternoon

The sun was unusually bright for late afternoon. Just beyond the sparkling lake and yellow fields we walked... hoping for some shade. Cheryl had brought along a gorgeous victorian chair and matching ottoman from home. (Brendon was nice enough to move it 50 million times while I changed my mind!) It fit perfectly with the style and color scheme - which I am loving! J.Crew has really outdone themselves this fall. If you haven't seen the latest mag or been online to see the new collection, I would highly advise it! There are so many fun colors and patterns paired with neutrals - and top that off with outstanding vintage jewelry! Wonderful job to the Nussbaum's for taking some of these ideas and making them your own! All of your hard work payed off and you did a wonderful job of putting together a terrific color scheme! The trail we found was absolutely beautiful with dancing filtered light and just out of reach of those harsh rays.... Here's a peek at our afternoon...

Cupcakes for Kristen!

Kristen is one of my favorites! She has a very sophisticated, regal look about her. She not only is tall and beautiful but, she has a delightful personality too! The 1932 classic Ford fits oh so well! Thank you to my "gramps" (John Hoerr) who has been restoring and perfecting this amazing car. He so graciously drove it for us and even allowed buttercream near the lovely leather seats! It absolutely completed the photographs! Carrie's never fails to amaze us with wonderful vintage finds... I spent an hour in her store just last week and didn't even notice the grand purple hat!!! You must have an entire afternoon just to see everything, even then you probably won't! In the midst of yesterdays chaos, I stumbled upon this quote from Audrey Hepburn. I love it! Much of the inspiration for our 2009 Cupcake Girl Calendar I have been drawing from legends like Audrey, Jackie O and Marilyn. Not only is the highlight of this cupcake series classic fashion but also the legendary women who brought about the fashion. I think this note from Audrey can inspire us all.

This morning was sweet... In more ways than one! Baby Gage is celebrating his first birthday this Saturday. So on my way to his one year photo shoot I popped into Trefger's Bakery to pick up a mini cupcake and candle... Yummy! I didn't even give into temptation and fought off the urge to buy one for myself as well! ...(I still want one!)... What is a birthday party with out balloons? Greg, of Greg Florists, was fun to chat with as one of his sweet assistants filled my colorful party decorations. What fun - and cake before 11 am?! Stay tuned for more images to come! As I promised before... Here are the rest of Miss Emily's images! We had quite an adventure together - from almost being trampled by the entire boys track team to our hike into what seems like the wilderness... (I may be exaggerating a bit but, wearing stilettos makes it quite a feat!) Either way, Em and i can laugh about it now... Ha Ha, right?! I'm sure the blisters on her feet have gotten a little less sore by now... You're a trooper Emily!

Energy, spunk and style all rolled into one equals Rosie. She quite certainly has more energy that I think is even humanly possible... Perhaps she was just excited and anxious to see her images but, as she bounced in the studio door at 8:30p.m. Tuesday evening it was obvious! After sticking her finger into the frosting of a buttercream cupcake she settled in to look at herself on the silver screen... "WOW!... Is that me?" I giggled, Janie (Rosie's mom) exploded with laughter and Rosie took another nibble of her sweet sprinkle delight. (I don't remember what flavor it was... ) Here is yet another peek at Rosie.... Wow! This shoot was a blast! (and tasty too!) In the next few months you will be seeing many more posts as we joining forces with Cakes on Walnut and their delicious cupcake creations, Jennifer North - A terrific Champaign Boutique featuring the wonderful French Connection Fall Line, Carrie's where you can find amazing vintage fur coats like the one Alex is wearing and SJK Studio for the sophisticated hair styling! A perfect end to a lovely day... Trisha and Dan looked outstanding in their 1920's era clothing as the sun set just beyond the tree line. They make the perfect couple together! Dave and I are looking forward to spending a week celebrating with them in Portland next June... and it couldn't be here soon enough!

It was one of those evenings you can only hope for in mid August. The warm breeze was perfect. Not too hot not too cool... but, just right. With sunset quickly approaching we walked up Oak Street entertained by the sights and sounds of a baseball game about to begin. There is a very obvious photogenic gene that runs in this family! The little boys defiantly stole the show with their adorable outfits and cute smiles! I couldn't help but, giggle when Gabriel told me, "I think I'm all smiled out!" Here's a quick snapshot of the evening...

Rosie has amazing style! I am incredibly jealous of her confidence to wear wild colors and crazy combinations. So, you've seen just a few highlights from Tess' senior session... Here are a few more just like I promised! Tess and her mom, Sally, saw all of the images for the first time this morning. Their reactions were worth the wait! Sally announced immediately, "Tess, you don't have any bad ones!" Tess and I both laughed. (for different reasons - I think...) I am still amazed and its been a week since her shoot. Tess is not capable of looking anything but absolutely adorable. I will stop now because Tess is probably blushing while reading this post... ;) Here's to you and your uber cuteness, Tess!

Tess and I spent an early morning at I Know You Like a Book photographing the first portion of her session. We laughed and chatted and all was going great ... That is, until I bumped a small table - spilling its contents all over the floor- as seems to be my style! Tess had just arrived back home from visiting Europe with her girl friends and, of course, I was curious (not to mention jealous). With her morning session being finished we made plans to meet back up that evening to grab a few more shots outside the store. My favorite is the one outside at the cafe table... Tess is a natural model, always so graceful, I am envious! Her new puppy, Shotsie (named affectionately after her aunt) was.... I will admit.... a challenge! The puppy seemed to think Tess' was a large sized chew toy! By the end of the day, we'd had a great time with the shoot, made a mess or two (or three) and captured some beautiful images. Rosemary is a terrific new mom and very photogenic too - despite what she says! She and Baby B. have a certain gracefulness that is so precious - even the clicks our cameras are making won't do them justice. As I was talking to her from behind the lens I knew these would be some of my favorite from the summer. Even though the images look so soft and sweet - Dave and I are really trying to hold it together as Baby B's dad has us rolling with laughter. What a great afternoon! These are some of my favs...

After two hours of running, laughing and playing in the park we were exhausted! (Especially me! Its quite obvious to me how I am getting a bit out of shape!) Chloe and Hudson are the best of friends and make quite a hilarious pair! They had me playing all kinds of games and laughing as they rolled around with Grandpa in the grass. This past saturday was the first ever Tour De Champaign bike race. Dave and I had a great time at Cakes on Walnut face painting and watching the race. Happy summer!

I wanted to share with you a few images from our weekend in Galena! The drive was gorgeous especially along the river and approaching the city. On the tops of the hills it seems you can see forever! The green rolling countryside was a sight I can't wait to see again. The balloon race taking place that weekend added splashes of bright color to an already beautiful view! We had a terrific time exploring the small town the day before... I found the best european chocolate shop and broke my diet... again! The chili and pear truffles were so worth it ;) Our family session was taken in the little park on the outskirts of the town and then later in the downtown area. We absolutely loved the relaxed mini-post-wedding session later that afternoon. Lovely family and a weekend to remember!
